Josiah E. Winants
Josiah E. Winants was born around 1823 in New York. He married a woman named Elizabeth, and they had at least two children: Josiah, born around 1848; and Elizabeth, born around 1849. They lived in New York, and he worked as a physician.
 
During the Civil War, he served as an acting assistant surgeon at Carver Hospital in Washington, D.C. He served in the Freedmen’s Bureau after the war. He settled in Wilmington, North Carolina, and he continued work as a physician. By 1870, he owned $1,200 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. He died of “hemorrhages of the lungs” in Washington, D.C., on May 24, 1884.
