Henry F. Dowst to Unknown, 16 May 1865
Augusta Ga May 16th 65

It has been some time since I wrote to you before I guess it has been 3 weeks or so

well the reason is this we started from Savannah Saturday the 6th day of May and have been on the march ever since. It is about 150 or 160 miles the way we have come so you see it is quite a walk we got into this place day before yesterday and camped on a hill about 4 miles from the City and yesterday we came here where we now are in the City in a big building that has been a Depot I guess

It has been a pretty hard march for us new soldiers that never marched before the old soldiers did not mind any thing about it.

I stood it firstrate so did most of the boys. We hit the river only once in coming that was at Sister's Ferry about 42 miles this side of Savannah Fred Whittier was sick there and took the boat and came up. Eph tibbetts and [faded] stood it very well he is lame now he rode some of the way in the ambulance. I stood it the best of any of the Vienna boys. some nights there was not but 14 or 15 men in the Co come in to camp I stacked arms with the Co most every night

I dont know how long we shall stop here in Augusta some say we shall go away from here soon but they dont know I guess we some expect to go to Macon and some say we are going to Atlanta dont know any thing about it It dont make any difference to me where we go I am all right any where. I am well and contented and have not wished my self at home once yet

It was pretty hard on the march with nothing to eat but hard tack and raw pork. we had beans for our breakfast this morning and they went good things are cheap in this place / but I dont have any money to buy any thing with

I got two letters from home the night before we started from Savannah.

I should have written to you before we come away but we started of in a hurry and I did not have time to write I was glad to hear that Lan had got home but was sorry to hear that Selden was so sick. I want to hear from home now and hear from him. The rebels are coming in here every day from Grant old Wheeler and his cavalry are here in the place Jeff Davis was here the other day but has gone to Savannah now so they tell us but it is almost too good to believe
