Friend Alanson
I take this opportunity to write you a few lines in answer to your kind favor of 21st ult which came to hand in due season and be assured with its contents I was much pleased but sorry to learn you were so unwell &c but I trust by this time you are much better if not quite well
I suppos you see that since my last we have changed our position slightly yes we have seen considerable service since then part of the time we had it pretty tough but for a month past we have been lieing around here doing nothing scarcely / and at present there seems to be but little prospect for active service in this department unless the rebels undertake another invasion which is not very probable to us here
After a months hard marching we are once more enjoying all that is incidental to "Camp Life" everything has been quiet with us nothing except the distant booming of a cannon occasionally indicates that we are in the vicinity of an enemy
It is just one year today since I joined the Battery and near this very place it was too and in looking back to that time I can realize quite a change in our situation of affairs I not only find myself accustomed to a soldiers life / much better fitted for its duties &c but the whole Army is better organized & better skilled and has better officers and in all respects except in numbers is better than ever before but enough of this I guess so how do you get on now and how is the state of the young females up there I should think what few of you there is left could have it all your own way with them I should like to up there with you a few weeks this fall in apple time wouldn't we have a gay old time though? I'll bet we would but never mind there is a good time coming so "let the world wag as it will" that's what I say
I have been looking for some of the Vienna boys to come / but none have yet arrived one of our Lieutenants has gone home after some of the conscripts he expects to stop two or three weeks and take them back with him he lives in Scowhegan well I guess I have scratched about enough so will close hopeing to hear from you soon my respects to all
Yours truly
