US Genl Hospl Emory Washington D.C.
Thursday eve March 9th 1865
"Friend Lan";
I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from you last Friday (March 3d) and to know that you was still in the land of the liveing, but was surprised that you were in that section of it
But it is military I suppose and great changes frequently occur in military life I suppose you have learned that by this time. you must pardon me for not writing you before for thare has been so much going on here of late that I have not had time to breathe The President's inogeration and his reception on the eve following his inogeration the 4th were of great interst and that I might have the privilage of witnessing again And we have temperance meetings and prair meetings and a sing two or three nights in a week. I was deturmined to write you this evening but I had hardly got seated before I was sent for to go to the chapel to sing, and so it is after 9 o'clock now. And it is so muddy here that it takes half the time to scrape boots and clothes I got a letter from home the same day that I did yours which I have not answered yet
My health is as good as could be expected of an Invalid or a condemed yankey as they call them but I have not had to draw a jacket yet and dont think I shall. The surgeon in charge has got an order to have certain men detached as Hospl atendants. they are paid on the Hospl rools and cannot be ordered away / I am still in the Dispensary in the Pill and Powder business. I think about as you do in regard to the war and it is the opinion of every one that the war can not last much longer. Old Sherman has administerd the last bitter pill and it is now operrating but I will take some time for it to operrate they are so custive.
I expect to serve my time out however It seems that our quota is full and every one is getting maried on the strength of it I am afraid you and I will get behind hand in that respect I think we had better get a furlough and get spliced (mahaw)
I suppose you get all the news in washington And as it is quite late and I do not think of any thing interesting to write and get something for my soar throat befor I close the Dispensary I will bid you
Good night and finish this in the morning
Friday morning
I have over slept myself this morning and have not time to write much this for it is most time to mail this and I have got business to attend to We get the Prescriptions put up in the fournoon It is rainy and cold this morning and my throat is as soar as tarn nation I understand that Sell and Ferd have enlisted I dont think they will have any fighting to do
But you must excuse me this time. Write soon.
Yours &c.
