Mary C. Gwyn
Mary C. Gwyn (maiden name: Thurston) was born around 1837 in Gloucester, Virginia, to Charles Thurston. She married John T. Gwyn in Gloucester County on December 23, 1858, and they had at least five children: Mary Grace, born around 1859; Laurence, born around 1865; Lucy, born around 1869; Fannie, born around 1871; and Matthew, born around 1876. Her husband worked as a farmer in Gloucester County. He served in the Confederate army from 1861 until 1865, suffering at least two injuries. He returned to Gloucester County after the war, and the family moved to Baltimore in the late 1860s. John worked as a railroad clerk there, and the family owned $750 of real estate in 1870. Mary died in Baltimore on February 16, 1897, “after a long and painful sickness.”
