John B. Morse to Emily Page, 20 July 1863
Gettysburg Pa July 20th 63

Dear Friend
I received your kind letter a long time ago, and should have wrote one in return before now but for the buisy times we have seen for the past few weeks. I think you have heard before this of the severe battles the Army has had at Gettysburg and other places. We gave Johny Reb a sound whipping here. we also lost a great number of men: the Division in which I belong lost more than one third in killed and wounded. my Regiment went into the battle on the third of July with / three hundred men and came out with one hundred and twenty. my Captain and ordely Sargant were killed.

I am on duty at the fifth core hospital atending Col Walker of Genl Sykes staff he is badly wounded in the breast.

in your letter I received your picture and a wedding card you can guess which I looked at the longest. need I add that I thought it was very butiful.

you wrote that you wer teaching Chool this summer. I hope you get along well. I suppose you have some bad Cholars in your school I know their was some whare I went to school and if I remember well I was one of the bad ones

I would like to visit your school very much but I can not this summer.

I dont know of any more to write now as it is quite late and I am quite sleepy.

write as often as you can as I am very glad to hear from you.

Yours Truly
John B Morse

P.S. Pleas direct your letter as before as I think I shal be with the regiment by the time that I get a letter from you. if not they will be sent to me
