Fort Mansfield June 12/63
Dear Brother
I have not received a letter from you in some time but I judge you have not forgotton me if you have I will remind you that your Brother Ed still lives and enjoys good health I presume you have as much to tend to as you can handly get along with without writing much at the presant work does not trouble me much this spring I am soaldiering it this summer what Uncle Sam pays me is clear gain to me and the reverse to him although I want one in the ranks well Will I guess now I will give you a description / of the weather it is very dry and quite warm the most of the time if thare does not come rain in a few days thare will be no crops here every thing is drying up well let it dry and after it gets good and dry then let it burn over if the rebs cant raise any thing they will think there is another bread riot I guess Old Grant is making them think of bread riots the rebs tried to make a raid into maryland yesterday morning they crossed the river about eight or ten miles from here at poolsville. thirty of our men drove two hundred of back acrossed the river they killed four of our men and we killed eighteen of them or rather I had heard so perhaps when we get the / particulars it will be diferant one thing I do now they have not got up to the 9th art yet I guess when they run afowl of the 9th they will think it is a man extermanator you will think I am praising the 9th up well I might the rest does the fighting and we do the cheering how long can this rebelion last under such treatment the war news is pretty good generly.
Well Brother I have got a little more money to send I will send a twenty dollar allotment if you never write any other time write as soon as you get the money for when I send money I am anxious to know wether it goes safe or not I guess I will have to close for it is getting dark the boys is all well I believe / you must write and let me now the particulars if there is any I will close by sending my respects to you all you will find enclosed in this twenty dollars in an allotment
