Dear Mother
I received your letter about five minutes ago and I was very glad to hear from you that you were well and had got the money safe I wrote a letter the other day to you which I expect you have got before this in it I said I had not heard from you for a long time, and I had got uneasy but to day I got three letters at one time one from Johnny which I was happy to receive and two from you or one letter and an envelope containing 2 sheets of paper and two envelopes which I was very glad to get when I wrote to you about sending me paper I was hard off indeed but I am all right now having got some / at Warrenton where we were paid off and where I spent a right smart of money for different things I should liked to have heard George deliver one of his war speeches I know they were good

You say you are uneasy at times on account of thinking about me how I sleep and one thing and another now I donot want you to fret your self about me for I am getting along first rate just now. I have good sleeping quarters and in the last letter you will see how I live I am glad the girls are enjoying themselfs in the country and that you and Charley have an easy time I hope you all will feel better by the first of September when they will all have to come home to resume thear dutys at school

I went out in the country about 3 miles to day and got a first rate dinner Harry West was along we had a nice time of it after we came into camp which was just now I got your letter and sit down and write you this

You need not be uneasy about me at all for I am all right and will take the best care of myself you may depend on that I hope George and Johnny will not have to enlist I do not think the goverment ought to take more than one out of a family one is enough and I donot think George and Johnny either one able to stand the hardships of a soldiers life for indeed it is a hard life for one that is not used to it

The regiment company is having a nice time just now all we have to do is to guard the bridge over the Rappahannock river every three days my turn comes to go on guard the rest of the time we can I have nothing to do of any account only half hour drilling every day is all the drilling we do that is very light work

I would like to hear Agie sing some of her songs tell her not to forget me I am in first rate helth (bully) helth in fact and I expect you would hardly know me with all the hair on my chin and uper lip

give my love to all at home to Johnny and Fidy and Agie and to the folks in the country and keep much for yourself

yours   Wm H Grape
