... an have have a nice time this summer out of town
 
We (the Legion) are not a working party any more but have joined the brigade again and all are now near Washington Va Our Company was left behind at Waterloo to guard a bridge lately put up there we staid there one week only

...troops have been paid off except our Legion to day just makes it five months since they owe us and some are in great want in our Legion for money to send home some say they donot see how there wife and children can get any thing to eat but they have to make out without money I wish they would pay us off so I could send you some money home for I expect you want some by this time when we do get paid I will send you it right away there is a great deal of talk about us going to Maryland pretty soon I hope it will be so as it is hard work marching up and down these mountains

...by yourselfs this summer while the rest are in the country I hope you will get along first rate there wont be many at home to bother you so while the rest are seeing good times away you two will have plenty of rest at home. tell Georgia I am much oblige to her for writeing to me I would answer her letter but I have got nary sheet of paper to write on I had to beg this one to write to you. now if when you would write you would put a sheet of paper and an envelope in your letter why then I would be all right and could answer your letter letter right away give my love to all at home and abroad to Johnny Fida and little Agie and reserve a big lot for your self from your aff son Wm H Grape
