General,
            I desire respectfully to bring to your attention and to recommend for promotion Sergt. William H. Grape a Veteran Volunteer.
 
            Sergt. Grape has served as a non-commissioned Officer in Company "A" Purnell Legion (Infty) since its formation in Sept. 1861 and was present in every action in which the Regt was engaged, except when a prisoner of War.
 
In Feby. 1864 he re-enlisted as a Vet. Vol. He has been twice in the hands of the enemy. At Catletts Station Va in Augt 1862 and at the battle of the Weldon R.Rd. Augt. 21, 1864 and has just returned after an imprisonment of six months.
 
            At the Muster out of the Purnell Legion the Veterans were transferred to the 1st M'd Vet. Vols., to it he will report when exchanged.
 
            As he has served under me during the past three years I speak with perfect confidence of his abilities and know that he has faithfully discharged every duty assigned him
