Office of Hammett & Co.
General Lottery Agents
Licensed by the United States Government.

New York January 21st 1865.

Dear Sir,
As we write to you on a subject that concerns your pecuniary interest, we trust that our letter will require no apology. Knowing full well that if a good Prize were sent to some person in your section of the State, who would show the money, and make it generally known, our business and reputation as Prize-sellers would be greatly benefited, we have taken the liberty of addressing you, to tender to you a beautifully arranged Package of Tickets, which we have carefully selected and labeled for you in the enclosed magnificent Scheme. We do this however only upon condition, that if successful, you use your influence among your acquaintances in our favor. You will please understand that we design this arrangement to act as an advertisement of our Firm, and you will therefore be expected to exhibit the money, and circulate the report that you drew it at Hammett & Cos Lucky Office.

Should you be prejudiced against Lotteries and have any objections to showing the money in this way, you of course, will not answer our purpose. H[paper torn away]

We will send you for $10 a full Official Certificate of Package of Sixteen Tickets, (the one selected,) in the enclosed truly rich and splendid Scheme of the "Royal Havana or Cuba Plan Lottery", to be drawn on the 28th of February 1865, by authority of the State of Kentucky, and we are so certain that we know how to select a Lucky Certificate, that if the one we select for you does not, at the very least, draw a $5,000 Prize, we will send you another Package in one of our Extra Lotteries—for nothing.

All Prizes drawn at our Agency are promptly paid at our Office No. 80 Nassau Street, in New York City, by Draft or otherwise, as the purchaser may direct. Send us $10 by return Mail, and give us the name of your nearest Bank so that there may be no delay in forwarding you a Draft as soon as the drawing is over.
Should you doubt either the Legality of our business, or our acting under authority of a U. S. License, you are at liberty to address either the Managers or make such other enquiry as you deem advisable. Use the enclosed envelope in making your remittance, and write the name of your Post office, County and State in a plain hand.

 Yours Truly
Hammett & Co
