Joseph Reed to Dallas Bender, 14 January 1862
Camp Pierpont Jan 14th/62
Dear Friend
I recieved your letter yesterday evening & it afforded me much pleasure to read it; I thought my school boys had all forgotten me but I was mistaken for there is still one that still remembers; Well Dallas it appears to me that I can see you this morning like I used to see you coming into the old school-house laughing; this is a duck [drawing of duck]
Well Dallas I must tell a little about things as they are down here in "old Virginny"; We are not doing anything only attending to our horses the mud is pretty deep. If we would stand in one place long we would get in over our heads; we have to move round to keep on top of it;
this is the most curious place ever I was in my life; there is not a fence within five miles of here; the sogers have carried them to their camps & burned them those that were left by the "secesh" are mostly torn down or destroyed in some other way; Everything presents a gloomy appearance; The health of this company is about as good as it has been any time since we came into Virginia; Kirby Evans has been sick for about a month but he / is getting better now
Shorty & I were guard night before last; we have one guard on our Pieces & two at the Horses; Dallas you had better look out or you will see me poping into that writing school one of these nights; Your well wishing friend
Jo. Reed
