Junius N. Spratley to Rebecca J. Spratley, 11 March 1862
(Mrs. R. L. Judkins)
(Rebecca Jane Spratley)
Petersburg Mch. 11th 1862
Dear Piggie
I have lots of news to write you since my last. the Governor has issued a proclamation calling out all the malitia in Virginia and I expect we will start now in a few days for our place of rendezvous. we are ordered to report to Genl. Huger at Norfolk. You may look out now for the war to come to a close for when the bloody 39th gets after the Yanks they will be sure to squander You neednt be surprised to hear of our capturing Burnside and the whole of his fleet and sending the whole of them (vessels included) to Petersburg as trophies of war. I suppose our arms will be corn stalks & brick batts and you know no army can resist such formidable weapons as those.
You will please send me the two shirts you have I dont think I sent you any buttons to go on them but will get Aunt Agness to put them on for me. Uncle Edward has sent in his name to the Surry Cavalry but if we are ordered off before he hears from them he will have to take a hand with us, which is verry mortifying to Aunt Agness I dont know what day we will start yet but will find out in the morning. we will start I suppose the last of this week. You must direct my shirts to the care of Capt Thompson at Harrell & Thompsons / and I will get him to forward them to me. If they had left off ordering us off for ten days longer they would have missed me as I should left here in that time. I think I shall send my name to the Surry Cavalry but I expect I have left it off too long as I heard yesterday that was filled up. I will write you my whereabouts as soon as our Commanding Officers get us to our destination I know that Lenius will laugh at me some for going with the malish. You must write me here until you hear from me as I will get some one here to forward them to me. My love to you all & believe me as ever your
Affectionate Brother
