Charles William Carlton was born around 1815 in New York. He eventually moved to Ohio, and he married Phebe Ann Webb on April 6, 1841. They had at least four children: Charles, born around 1843; Walker, born around 1849; Frank, born around 1854; and Harriet, born around 1856. They lived in Newberry, Ohio, and he worked as a merchant. By 1850, he owned $1,100 of real estate.
They moved to Franklin, Ohio, in the 1850s and then to Covington, Ohio, in the 1860s. By 1870, he owned $3,500 of real estate and $3,500 of personal property. By 1880, he was living in his son Walker’s household in Kansas City, Missouri. He later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. A writer there described him as a “small, nervous man with white hair and beard. During the summer months he spent much of his time in University Park, and always had a book with him.” He committed suicide in Indianapolis on February 14, 1899.
