Haverhill May 17th/61
Dear Father
I received your letter last night stating that you were all well, and I was very glad to hear it. you said that Uncle Daniel let the cat out of thebag about my enlisting in my countrys service. myself and eight others enlisted. Among them was Daniel Carr, six out of the nine were picked to go. Daniel's eye sight being poor he was thrown out. you wanted to know how long I had enlisted for. I enlisted for three months at first, but if they want us longer why we shall go. you wanted to know about the Company / and where we were to bestationed we cant tell where, we shall go into camp next week (probably at Concord Mass); you wanted to know the name of the Company. we have no name we shall try and earn a name. we are styled

Finneus Dike is Colonel of the Reg. I send you my picture as you requested, [?] there and at Groveland. give my love to all and accept this from your ever
