William R. Carr to Henry D. Griffin, 3 November 1861
(Nov 3d/62
Camp near Seneca Mills

Brother Henry
I received your letter Nov the 1st and was very glad to hear from you, I got four letters in the same mail from Groveland. I was very much surprised to hear of the marriage of George Spencer. I dont see what he was thinking off. you wanted to know how I was getting along. I will tell you; our Co. was on guard when I received your letters. It commenced to rain that night and I tell you it rained with a vengance. There was a very heavy wind at the time. we tried to keep a fire but the rain put it out as fast as we could / build it. we got all wet through every rag of clothing that I had on was as wet as it could be. It continued to rain untill last night. I should liked to had you seen us yesterday the watter running through our tents and every thing inside as wet as it could be, and some of the boys outside holding on to the tent to keep it from blowing down. some of the Officers tents were blown flat to the ground. But this morning it is quite plesant. We shall have a chance to dry our clothes I hope. Speaking About shoemakers they are few and far between. I havent seen any at work since I came out here. About those boots now I want you to make me / a pair of heavy calf boots, double sole and tap (Peged). I want them made 8 size (thick over the toes, you know about how I want them.) I want them to be long leged, as high as the knee. I want steel irons on the toes and heels. I thought it was best to get you to make them, for I cant get a pair of decent boots out here unless I pay eight or nine dollars for them. I want you to get me a dark colored woolen vest and send with the boots, one that will button up close to the chin. They will have to be sent by Adams Express. It must be directed in this way William Carr, Company I 12th Regiment Mass Volunteers Washington, D.C. By Adams / Express. Please Forward.

I want you to write and let me know if you will send it and when you will send it, so that I can keep watch for it. we are going to build a fireplace in our tent to day, and see if we cant keep warm. We build them in this way. We dig a square hole in the middle of the tent, stone it up. we dig a flue under ground for the smoke to pass through, then build a chimney of sod on the outside. It makes a first-rate fireplace I assure you. As I have got three letters more to write to day I must close. Please write as soon as you receive this. Give my Respects to all and accept this from your Brother,
