Asahel Tyrrell was born on September 23, 1802, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Elijah and Clarissa Tyrrell. His father earned a living as a blacksmith and farmer. The family oved to Ohio around 1806, and he grew up and attended school in Fowler, Ohio. According to an early biographer, he “assisted his father in the blacksmith shop and also learned the trade of carpenter and joiner.” He married Lucretia Webster around 1823, and they had at least three children: Asahel, born around 1831; Sylvia, born around 1839; and Mary, born around 1845.
He worked as a mechanic in Fowler, and by 1850, he owned $4,000 of real estate. He supported the Whig Party until the 1850s, when he became a Republican. According to his biographer, he was “active in promoting every public enterprise.” His wife died on November 10, 1871. He married Emeline Lampson on December 22, 1872, but she died in August 1874. He then married Polly Reeder on February 20, 1875. He died on December 17, 1884.
