Dear Bros & Sister
I received your kind letter of 10th last evening—found it with two others in my tent just as was about to retire for the night. had been on picket or would have got them in the morning. Before I go any further I must caution you not to address me as Capt without authority. any old canal barge has its Capt though very fiew have a Lieut. Am surprised that you are so careless about Churchgoing. if you put it off a couple of months longer hope to be able to go / with you. by the way are you going to have a turkey for Christmas dinner. if so I will accept of your invitation to dine on that day—provided Uncle Sam will Grant my request, though he may take it into head not to honer my request—slight me, as your uncle did you in relation to the wedding. have no fears of my useing you so, when placed under the same circumstances, though must confess much to my regret that my prospects with the young lady mentioned, are far from flattering to myself. If as is reported, Charlie pledged his love while at home, I must give him credit for doing a very / sensible act. of course I claim to have done the same thing, but then—the young lady, she, she dident reciprocate.
In order to set at rest any feelings you may have in regard to my favoring Hope's communications above yours I will state (confidentially of course) that I received one from her about a week ago that has not been answered yet. While to yours received last night, here goes, but dont tell Hope, as I would have to make an appology there.
In regard to that money I will certainly take pleasure in sending soon as can find a PM who will honer me with his check. our regiment / was paid about two weeks ago. as I had been mustered out as a 2d Lieut I could not get my pay on the Company Rolls and he had no blank pay accounts with him. the consequence was that two other officers and myself went without our pay. he promised to send us some accounts so that we could fill them out and send to him at Ft Monroe. he has not fulfilled his part of the bargain yet.
I believe there has been no change here to speak of since I wrote to some of you. Am in good health and remain as ever your bro
