Dear Sister
Tis now a long while since have heard from or writen to thee. will undertake the latter before any greater length of time elapses. but a small part of our mail for the past six weeks has reached us oweing to our expeditionary forces to Wilmington—we only took our effective men along leaveing the beats and baggage behind and the mail was sent up to our old camp as usual. Since the 8th of last month have spent most of my time at sea and did not feel much disposed to / correspondance though was not actualy sea sick but one day. arrived here five days ago have been very devoted to nursing my pet it does not seem to improve much and is quite painful at times. I made an application for leave to day, was in hopes would get home next week but received the the very consoling information that my leave would probably get back from Hd Qrs in about two weeks. if I knew of no better place it would be quite endurable to remain here that length of time the building used for officers hospital was before the war a female seminary and is pleasantly situated / near the bay and about a mile and half from Ft Monroe We get good treatment and fare. in the room along with myself I have agreeable companions in the persons of two Pennsylvania officers, but we all have home on the brain.
The war news at present seems to wear a very cheering aspect. the army of the James is particularly jubilant over the removal of General Butler notwithstanding his farewell address to them that he was relieved from the command of what he was wont to call his army because he would not shed innocent blood by precipitating them in a hopeless assault / against Ft Fisher. Such gasconade from that source is fully appreciated, though rather ill timed. probably no General in the US Army has sacrificed more men with less to show for it than the same magnanimous Butler.
As it is getting near supper time I must wind up as that is an important affair not to be neglected
Ever thy loveing brother
Adam
