James Longstreet to Robert B. Reynolds, 17 April 1861
Albuquerque N.M.
April 17th 1861
My Dear Major
Your favor of the 14th is at hand. The QuarterMaster here tells me there is no chance of my getting any transportation for my escort to Stanton or Fauntleroy for some time. So I return your checks. If I do not go home I will in all probability get news of my Deposit of forty thousand by the time I can get transportation. My letters by the last mail call me home and I cannot, at present, see that I can do otherwise than go. If Capt Seward is appointed PayMaster and assigned to duty in this Department I hope that I may be able to get a leave long enough to take my family home. If I cannot I see no hope but to resign at once. My family is so situated that I cannot well send them home without me.
I remain Sir very Respectfully
Your Mt. Obt. Servt.
James Longstreet
Maj. R. B. Reynolds
PayMaster.
