Oct 22nd 1863.

My Dear Nannie;
               Yours of the 6th Inst. has just been handed to me. I am sorry you were not well and had to have the Dr burn you! hope it was not as bad as the burning you had while at Tunnel Hill & Marietta La. I am glad you have enjoyed yourself as well as you say you have while at Pa's! hope you will be able to say that you were well pleased with your visit, when you go home. You seem to dislike Miss Mary Bowen because nature has not done as much for her as some others. I have never liked or disliked any one because they / were either pretty or ugly. I have liked Miss Mary a long while, for she has ever been as a sister to me. If you don't care to be troubled with any of my lady friends I don't want you to make yourself agreeable because they are my friends. I have not heard from your brother Tom since I saw his Col. don't know where he is. You think you cant write three times a week I will not hold you to your promise if you don't want me to. As well as I like to get your letters I don't want you to write to me any oftener than you care to write. Write when you feel like writing to me and only then. I assure you I will be as patient as I can, and that you will never hear another word of complaint from me. I will leave it with you to write when you please though I cant see that you have / any room to complain as I have had but two letters from you since I left Marietta, very near two months ago. I guess you are getting tired of my letters, as you told brother Joshua you could not tell from them whether I was drunk or not. As you will go home in a short time this will be the last letter I will be able to write you at Foster's. I am glad John has gone to Tuscaloosa. I think he will like Tuscaloosa much better than he would Marietta. We have no tents as yet, and I can not see any prospect of getting any soon. As I have written Ma a short letter I will send yours in the same envelope. With much love to my dear little wife I am your affect
