Dear Darling
It has been but a short time since [faded] telegraphed to you [faded] in my haste [faded] all I kniew [faded] had done before and [faded] you will not expect such a long letter this time. Lieutenant Hammond had his leg amputated and lived but about 25 hours afterward. Frank left this place for home this morning with the body of his brother. Lt. Col Inge [?] gallantly at his post; but what is all this honor the world can heap upon him, to him now? Some of my men have returned to duty, I think I had only one man killed; don't know how many was wounded in the day's fight; have some three or four who is in a very critical condition, but I hope they may get well. Both of my Lieuts have returned to duty. Lieut Stewart was not wounded.
Mrs Laymann has taken her buket of [faded] the soldiers [faded] and I have [faded] meals. What a wonderful change has come over this woman. [faded] would be if all women [faded] their mind [faded] fiew days time [faded] countenance any [faded] would not give a soldier [faded] but at their [faded] talk to them like dogs; [faded] it done my [faded] to tell her of it, and [faded] tables are turned, and I dont care how mad she gets for I dont care to stay with her any longer if I cant have [?] out of her. She is satisfied that I am not very anxious to stay with her. My dear darling I have written this short letter mearly because I was anxious to tell you that I still love my sweet little wife, and that she is first in all of my thoughts. My ankle is improving. Write soon [faded] love and kisses to my darling Sim
