Selwyn E. Bickford to William H. Anderson, 19 December 1865
Fort Monroe, Va. Dec. 19th 1865.

Dear Anderson,
I am at a loss to know why you don't answer my last letter. I wrote to you about the first of November—I don't know the exact date—and think that by this time I am deserving of an answer. I wrote Alice at the same time, and have not since heard from her. It is to be presumed that she may have other attractions, and not be disposed to write me, but I did not think that I should be entirely neglected by you. The note you wrote me previous to my last, was a reminder that I was remiss in my epistolary attentions, and you now give me a receipt in full, by equal delay. Did I not acknowledge to you, my fault, and give you a fair promise to do better if you would over look it? I certainly intended to make ample amends for past neglect, and hoped that you would receive it in the same spirit that it was sent. I hope that on the receipt of this, you will write me, even briefly, that I / may know, if it is anything upon my part that hinders our free communication, and hasten to remove it.

As ever
Very truly Your friend
Selwyn E. Bickford
