Joseph Wilder Howes
Joseph Wilder Howes was born around November 1812 in Montpelier, Vermont, to Joseph and Martha Howes. He married Julia Wright on July 6, 1837, and the couple apparently had no children. They lived in Montpelier, and he earned a living as a merchant. By 1850, he owned $6,000 of real estate. A local writer described him as “one of the active and prominent business men of Montpelier.”

He moved to Montreal, Canada, around 1854 “to assume charge of the office of the United States & Canada Express Company.” He served as United States vice consul from 1861 until 1864. He returned to America around 1870, and he briefly lived in Chicago and St. Louis before settling in Boston, Massachusetts. He died of cerebral apoplexy in Boston on May 13, 1890.
