I have received to-day a letter from Bell in answer to mine about Father's coming to Memphis. I am delighted to hear you all are well. Yesterday I had a letter from Father in answer to my letter that you sent him about his coming to Memphis, and as he did not like the change & I was not able to do anything definite about it, you need not fear of his getting West or South at present. I wish I could have been home Christmas to contribute
to the list of presents.
Matters go on finely with me & my health is splendid, which is about all I can add
to what I have already written.
By the croaking frogs, by the chirp of the robin, & last but not least by the pestilent mosquito we are warned that warmer weather is near. What a contrast to the weather you are having these days! Bell's letter was / very short. Hardly a thing was said about home in particular and nothing about the town. Tell me in your next what Eddie studies and "lots" of things.
I suppose many people are squirming up there over this call of 300000 more.
Since writing the first part of this epistle I have been to New Orleans on business.
I saw there Mr. Beedy & stopped all night with him, sleeping in a bed for the third time since in the service. That eve he had a letter from home bearing the same date of Bell's I got to-day. I also visited one of my classmates. I hope to go to the city again soon & visit the 7th Vt there.
Next time you may expect one of my journal letters as our work will be light unless "forward march" is sounded.
Love to all.
Write often & the longest letters you ever saw.
Your dear Brother
John
