William H. Gavitt was born around 1832 in Pennsylvania to Libbeus and Mary Gavitt. His father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate and $400 of personal property in 1860. He grew up in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and the 1850 census listed him as “Deaf + Dumb.” By 1860, he was working as a Methodist clergyman. He enlisted in the Union army on September 28, 1863, and mustered in as a chaplain in the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out on July 12, 1865. He married Mary L.
