William H. Gavitt was born around 1832 in Pennsylvania to Libbeus and Mary Gavitt. His father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate and $400 of personal property in 1860. He grew up in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and the 1850 census listed him as “Deaf + Dumb.” By 1860, he was working as a Methodist clergyman. He enlisted in the Union army on September 28, 1863, and mustered in as a chaplain in the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out on July 12, 1865. He married Mary L. Blakslee around 1865, and they had at least four children: Edward, born around 1866; William, born around 1869; Arthur, born around 1871; and Harry, born around 1880. They moved to Barton, New York, in the late 1860s, and by 1875, they were living in Greene, New York. They moved to Sterling, Pennsylvania, sometime before 1880, and he died of typhoid pneumonia in Center Moreland, Pennsylvania, on December 21, 1883.
