In Camp at Jefferson Va
           
Dear Sister Martha
            I received yours and Fathers kind letter last near [?] Station and was very glad to hear from you I was sorry to hear that Father was laid up I wrote home the same day that I received your letter I have been unwell for the past four days but am gaining We have marched a long distance since we left Pleasant Valley we have marched I should think about seventy five miles. We arrived here saturday night and / we shall probably move foreward in a day or two for Culpepper fiveteen miles distant. This town of Jefferson is pretty well cleaned out both Armies having been through it so much I went into town sunday and after travelling around a long time I managed to get a breakfast which consisted of bread and butter meat and some milk for which I paid forty cts I brought away some bread and milk I attended meeting in town on sunday. There are a great many persimmons grow around they are very nice I wrote you in one of my letters to send me out / a good pair of gloves you can send them by mail in This is my last envelope that I have I wish you would just put in one in the next letter you send as our sutler has not come along yet and I do not know when he will be along Those stamps you sent came just at the right time as I was all out when we got into winter quarters I wish you would send me out a sox with a few of your nice apples and cider and a pair of winter shirts and drawers and any thing else that you think would come handy Gill is well Charley and Reub I have not seen for some time I expect we shall / to spend fourth of July perhaps by spring I do not think of much more to write you must write as often as you can tell the neighbors to write tell them that I can not get time to write a great deal now being [faded] I believe I must close excuse the bad writing I received those papers you sent for which accept my thanks my love to all from your affectionate brother William
