Dear Mother
I received Martha's kind letter of the 18th yesterday and was happy to hear from you all. And I also received those Journals. I wrote her last wednesday which you I suppose have received ere this. I am getting pretty smart again My ancles can not bear a great deal of travel as it causes them to swell to use them much. This is a stormy day it has been snowing blowing and drifting since early this morning. It is a hard / Northeast storm like those we have up home some times. This is a cold building. the snow drives in the cracks in miniature drifts I was intending to be examined to day but there was none on account I suppose of the storm. How does Father like his job. Will Uncle Charles move down there. These are miserable buildings for a Hospital in the winter but would do well in the summer if t'was managed right To day you know is Washington's birthday and is to be observed here in this city to morrow. Gen Butler I presume you know passed through here the other day I will send / slip out from the Clipper You will see by this an account of the horrible accident at the fort. It is four weeks ago since I was out on a pass. How do the boys like their rings I have got one made for Charles but is not filled so I will not send it to day. This weather must be tough for the boys in the field. I hope they will not suffer much There is not a great deal of news to write. Has Mr Morrill got back yet? I have not received any answer yet from Seargent Emerson whom I wrote a little over two weeks ago. So Martha does the milking how much does the cow give now? Do you make / any butter? Hunt loses some good help when he loses Father, and Charles. Keep me informed of all the news but I must close

Write often Here is a small piece of silk which I picked up in Fredericksburg. Did you get those two beans I sent in my letter before last I had a good receipt book in Fredericksburg before that battle which I was intending to send home but had to throw away. My love to all from your affect' Son
