Dear Mother
I now sit down to answer Martha's kind letter of the 10th which I received this forenoon. I wrote Martha last wednesday. I am getting along pretty well. I wrote in my last that that there was an arrival of patients from Frederick Md It appears that they are breaking up the hospitals at that place and sent a lot of them on here. One squad came on tuesday evening another on wednesday and still another on thursday noon so that hospital is now pretty full They are from different states some from Me NH NY Penn. Mass N.J. &c. I wrote in my last that I received a letter from Thos Gay. I received a Mirror yesterday from him containing an account of the reception of the 2nd reg't / It appears that the citizens gave them a splendid reception. I hope Father will like his new job. I was sorry to learn that Aunt Statira is sick, and that Evie has the diptheria, as it is so dangerous a disease. There was one death in this hospital last winter from that disease. I went out on the street for a little while last friday and went in to the Washington Monument and had a grand view of the city and patapsco river this monument is 180 ft in height and is built on a rise. We are having regular March weather now cold and blustering. to day it is cloudy and cold. There is a report to day that Vicksburg is taken but I hope 'tis so. I have not much more news to write. Tell Evie I will write her soon. Write me all the news you can. Give my respects to Aunt Statira. I see by the NY Herald that the democratic nominee for Governor got the most votes as far as heard from. I must close. My love to all. William
