John L. Fish to Martha A. Fish, 22 July 1862
July 22nd/62
Camp opposite Fredericksburg

Dear Sister Martha
You will have to excuse me for not writing oftener as I have not been well for about 2 weeks but am better now I suppose you have got mine of the 6th about 2 weeks ago. when a person is not well he does not feel like writing. I received yours of the 9th the 16th and was happy to hear that you were all enjoying good health. McClellan has had a hard time at Richmond as you hear the same as we. We cannot tell half we hear by the papers hope Gen McClellan will accomplish his object though it may be some time yet. It is courius the way things work through the war It is strange that The Goverment cannot have money enough it looks as though some of the head men were making so much money out of it and want it to last. I was glad to / you had so good a time on the 4th. You have had hot weather as well we probably nearly as hot as we have. There are plenty of blackberries whortleberries cherries Xcc some of the boys have been out a few miles and found great quantities. I suppose seems it is rather hard enlisting men in New Hampshire. We have not moved yet as you see but is expected that we shall move on to Richmond by way of Gordonsville when we move. I have not heard from Charlestown lately. A year ago yesterday you know was the battle of Manassas. You must write often and let us know the news from home What do the people think about drafting should suppose a man had rather volunteer than be drafted.

My Love to all the Folks

Give My Best Respects to Uncle Charles Aunt Statira and also to Mr Baker's folks and all inquiring friends.

From Your Brother
