Camp near Sharpsburg Md.
Dear Sister
I received your letter to day, and was glad to hear from you. It is pretty cold here to day the wind is bloing pretty sharp, and causes the men to remain inside of their tents as much as possible, but the tents we have now do not protect us from the cold as much as should be done, but I suppose this kind of weather will not last long. I think we will get into winter quarters before long and then we will get large tents, and can fix a / comfortable dwelling There are a good many sick in our reg't, and others about here, the boys of Hartleton are well. The 142nd Reg PV are lying near our camp. I saw the Nap boys, Hoofman's boys and some others that I knew who are in it. We have been encamped here a good while there is no telling how long we will remain yet you mentioned in your letter that if I needed a pair of mittens or stocking I should let you know and you would send them to me I would like very much if you would knit me a good pr of mittens with a / place for the thumb & fore finger seperate also a pr of stockings stockings I can draw for less money than you can knit them, and they are good. I wish you would make me a good vest out of some heavy stuff say black or blue, and have it cut to button up to the neck, and I want you to get Hiram Runder to make me a good pr of substantial boots for this winter as they will be warmer and better to wear through the snow and mud tell him to have the legs come up to my knees and to sew on the soles with a pr of half soles on top take my money to pay for them or if you can trade you can keep it. John Glover is getting a pr too and then / you can send my things with his. Tell Runder to make them immediately and have them ready perhaps some persons will be down this way before long and you can send them, if not you will have to express them however you will have nothing to do but to hand it over to Mr Glover and he will see to it. I almost forgot I ought to have a pocket-handkerchief you may send me one, a colored one. If they send any eatables that is Glover's, Haye's, or Reed's folks, you can send some for me. if you do send, for one thing send me some dried cherries and tomatoes if you have any to spare.
