Camp Parole

Apr. 7th 1865

Dear Sister:—
I received your letter of the 4th inst. containing ten dollars. Am much obliged to you for it. You need not send the other ten at present as I got some money of Uncle Sam'l.

I now owe you $90 in all that is the sum I borrowed to start out with. And for which you have nothing to show for I presume however you will trust to my honesty. Shall return the money during the summer as I draw it from the government. Officers pay was increased some time ago. My / pay—rank 1st Lieu't—will amount to about $125 to $130.00 per month so if I have good luck and stay one year my salary will amount to about $1500 or $1600.00. Of which I ought to save $700.00 after paying my debts & expenses. Our regiment is still here and there is every indication of us remaining. I have a fine time of it at present; don't have much to do. My work is all done in the morning, and takes about an hour to do it, after which I am at leisure. Can read or loaf just as I wish. I intend to read all I can, am going to get some books.

I tell you there is a great difference in being an officer and in being a private. An officer has no guard to do or anything of that kind; and there / is still more difference between the duties of a surgeon & that of an officer who commands troops; the former has no drill to do, or any such like; all he has to do is to attend the sick. I have since here, had a patient with acute rheumatism; he is now about and doing right well.

Presume you have heard of the fall of Richmond: glorious news, is it not. Report has it this evening that Lee with his whole Army surrendered to our forces. I now believe that this summer will see the war ended; however if it does close we will be kept until the expiration of our term of enlistment. Don't care, would just as leave be here as at home, if in this position all the time.

Write soon and give all the particulars /

Very respectfully
Y'r brother
W. H. Weinrick
