Dear Sister:
Yours of recent date was rec'd. Since I last wrote you the nation has been made to mourn its loss. Abraham Lincoln is dead! He, who was the friend of all, both rich and poor, high and low has been put to death by the hand of the assassin. Though he is dead, may we live to avenge his fall. In the language of the Lieut. Governor of Illinois in his proclamation to the people of said state, when in speaking of the death of one of the noblest sons of Illinois, he says: "The slaveholder's most accursed rebellion has gone to its doom, while perpetrating the most infamous / crime in the history of the world."
The war is virtually at end. The angel of peace will soon spread her wings and that happiness which has ever been the boast of the American people will be restored unto us again. There is not much of interest transpiring here in camp at present. Our work goes on with regularity & precision; however at times our monotony is disturbed, either an acceleration of spirit in rejoicing, or a despondent one of grief. Hope that when our peace & happiness as a nation is restored to us again, that it will not again be disturbed by the bane of contention. I am well & getting along finely. I got some books which I am reading. Have plenty of time to do so, fully as much as though I were at home
Write soon.
Your brother W. H. Weirick
