Camp Parole Annapolis Md.
May 6th 1865.
Dear Sister:
I rec'd Aunt's letter with your note. Have not much news of interest to communicate you this time. Appearances about camp remain the same. Men however are being sent to their respective regiments, and there is some talk of converting this place into a General Hospital. Don't know, if such should be the case, whether we would remain here or not. A great many men will be discharged before long. I think that all the regiments in the field will be sent home between this and the 1st of August next, with perhaps the exception of most of the Negro troop, and the regular Army. Our men expect to be discharged about the 4th of July. However it is best not to / too sanguine. I for my part don't care whether they keep us the full term or not. Mary, I am short of money, I wish—if you can spare it—you would send me some. Say $10 at a time. We were mustered for pay the other day, but there is no telling when we will get paid it. The government is discharging troops now, and will need all the money it can scrape. I must have funds as it cost me a great deal. It has cost me from the time I borrowed those $25.00 of you to go to Phila up to the present $200.00. You may think it a good sum to run through in a short time, so it is, but has gone for clothes, traveling expenses and in the way of living. The government owes me at present about $170.00, and one of the officers owes me $20.00 which I lent him some time ago, making $190.00, so that I am $10.00 short. However I have my uniform & some other clothes, so in reality I have made. My salary per month is nearly $150.00.
