Virginia Oct the 19 1861
Dear Sister I am well at present and I hope that these few lines may find you enjoying the same blessing I received a letter from you and Mary this evening and I was very glad to hear from you Dear Sister I think that father acted very strange when I was at home the last time that I was at home he hardly spoke to me the last time I was at home I dont know what was the reason unless it was because I came home to see my wife once more before I would go in to battle field Sarah I want you to tell father if he minds the time that I was lying on my Death bed and evry body else thought so if he remembers the time / he made the remark if I would die he could not get along without me Dear Sister if god spares my health to get home once more walnut bend wont hold me any longer than I can get my wife and child Dear Mother I hope that your nee well I want you to take good care of my wife and child while they are there and god will reward you for it and you will always have the good will of your Son if I cant get any pay here soon I want you to pay Mary for that stove or part of it so that she can get some winter clothes for herself and my boy Dear Mother probily you and father think this is hard talk but I cant help it if youns knowed how I felt for my wife and child you would not think / hard of it Dear Mother I want you to remember me at a throne of grace and if we never should meet in this world again I hope to meet you in glory farewwell Mother may god bless you
Sarah we have no particular war news we get plenty to eat and all doing well there is five good looking boys here in this tom whitmer and Charly Krotzer get kind of wild some time if the take anotion none of us can do any thing with them we are about nine miles from washington city in camp [?] we have not got into any fight yet but yesterday we were called into battle but it turned out to be a battalion drill Charly / has your likeness yet and is taking good care of all the boys do send their best respects to you and the rest of the good looking girls tom whitmer wants you to tell his sister to write to him Nothing more at present but write daily Your affectionate
