York. Town. May 4th/63
Camp Winfield Scott
Dear friend it is with the greatest of pleasure that now seat myself for the purpose of answering your welcome letter which I received yesterday and was very glad to hear from you once more and I am glad to inform you that this morning the union flag waves over the Rebels Fort at York town. the enemy have all left York town last night I cant tell where they will go But however we will follow them where ever they go I have not much time to write this morning for we have to pack up and get ready to start
I told your brother to write to you and he said he would and if you fanny tell her to write and direct as she always did we got our pay this week but I am sorry to say that I cant get my likeness taken to send to you for I expect we will march in a day or two the next time you write let me know whether lavina is at home or not and if she is tell her to write to me the boys are all well at present there has only been two of our Regiment hurt yet and they were hurt yesterday by a canon ball that came from one of the enemys guns and struck a pine tree and cut the top off the tree top fell down and hurt two of / our men
we have very nice weather down here the are getting green and every thing looks pleasant our men are in hot persuit of the enemy to day they have taken six thousand prisoners to day Well I must close for this time perhaps the next time that I write I can tell you more news But please write soon
I am well at present and hope these few lines may find you in the same state of health
