Dear Friend I seat my self down to address you with a few lines to inform you that I am well at present and hope you are the same. Ike is well he got a letter from you to day you requested me to write to you wich I do with the greatest of pleasure. we have a very nice time of it now. I think we will have a good rest for we need it. after our long march to from Fredericksburg to Gettisburg I came to Gettisburg / destitute without any shoes on my feet Got in the fight on the 1st day of July wich will be long rememberd by me you do not know how I felt when Ike told me that my dear brother was killed but I hope he is better off than you or I in heaven above whare thare is know war but all is peace and happiness. I hope to meet him in that better world to come. give my best wishes to Till and Cas Krotzer and tell them I am well. I hardly know what to write but Sallie if I was with you I could tell you a long story / about what I have seen. I will close for the present
