George Manton Whipple
George Manton Whipple was born on January 9, 1830, in Salem, Massachusetts, to Henry and Harriet Whipple. His father was a book seller. He grew up and attended school in Salem, and by 1850, he was working as a clerk. He married a woman named Eliza, and they had at least three children: Isabelle, born around 1855; Alice, born around 1859; and Henry, born around 1875. By 1860, he was working as a book seller in Salem, and he owned $1,000 of personal property.

In the fall of 1861, he received a commission as captain of Company F of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry. He served on recruiting duty from September 1862 until December 1862. He contracted rheumatism in January 1863, and he resigned on April 30, 1863.

He returned to Salem after leaving the army and resumed his work as a book seller. By 1870, he owned $7,000 of real estate. His wife probably died in the 1870s, and he married Emeline Bayley on June 13, 1878. By 1880, he was serving as secretary of the Essex Institute. He travelled to England “and the continent of Europe” in the spring of 1888. He died of myocarditis in Salem on April 19, 1913.
