Friend Charley
I am well at present & hope these few lines will find you the same. now is the time when we are in more of a hurry than we was in harvesting at work at our corn & clover & apples &c. you I suppose are in the middle of the land of Rebeldom surrounded by treacherous whites & blacks not knowing who is your enemy. I would like to be in your camp with you for a while. I find by looking on the map you are in the suth part of Verginia near the dismal swamp I hope you are comfortable / I should like to have you explain the climate I have heard some folks say the nights is warm some say the they are cold & damp what kind of arms you are funished with. I thought you was in the Aldrich Co untill I saw your address if Ben Perry is in your Co. I understood him to say Brigam & Mo Herrald was in Aldriches Co with him Terry ran away but Sherref Hildreth took him & put him in jail but I hear he has ben sent on after the Co if he is there you must look out for him for he is a rascal he worked for me last summer but you will find him out if he is there. the best advice I can give you is keep a stiff / upper lip & wide a wake the next time I write I will write more. it is so uncertain about the letters going right. send to shorts vill
