Portsmouth Virginia July 6th 1863

Friend Euphemia
I fear that a letter from me at the present time will be looked upon as an intrusion, for I am aware that you are still very sick, and I will take the liberty of writing but a few lines. I am sorry to hear you are no better, but donot be discouraged, while there is life, there is hope. Gold is only made the purer by being tried by fire, and health will be the sweeter and better appreciated when regained after such an illness. I am truly glad that your Brother was successful in get a leave of absence to visit you a few days. I hope he may find you much better than he expected to when he left here. In one of my last letter to you I requested your likeness. I understood by Charlie that you were willing to send it, and requested my likeness in return. I will send you a photograph, but I presume it will not look natural to you, for ten months in the service must make a change in all of us. I should be very greatful for your likeness if you could send me one and not rob those that have a better claim than I do. I donot know but I have already written too much, but I trust you will be better by the / this shal be received, and when I know that you are able to read a longer letter, I asure you I shall take pleasure in writing one, but for the present I will bid you good buy, and that Heaven may bless and soon restore you to health, is the deares wish of your
