James W. Barnett to Unknown, undated
Wed. morn.                             Yesterday our ball cartridges were taken from us before commencing to fire the blanks—and last night at roll call, we were re-supplied with 20 round—About midnight we were all waked up in a great hurry—and ordered to put on our accoutrements and be ready at a moment's notice. We also got the balance of the 40 round. We lay in our tents with our arms expecting to be called out—but by and by fell asleep and slept till morning. guess the field Officers had their horses beside them all night, An attack was expected. We could hear cannon booming nearly all night—supposed to be from the blockade of the Potomac—Signals were thrown up on all sides. Officers riding about in a great hurry—on the whole appearances were a little squally—but not enough so to disturb our after slumbers. Yesterday a / balloon was sent up from Cloud's Mills—with what result I do not know. I would like to write more but have not time—love to all—
