Dear Sir
Your letter of the 4th inst is just received.
Morgan's force at the commencement of the Ohio raid—that with which he crossed the Cumberland—was 2460 men rank & file, and four pieces of artillery. This force, by the time that we reached Cincinnati, had been reduced by casualties in Kentucky and after crossing the Ohio river, to about two thousand. You are correct in supposing that the column had artillery with it when it passed through Glendale. /

I have no recollection of the other incident which you mention. Genl Morgan and I were not captured at the same date and place, nor were we taken to prison together, although subsequently confined in the same prison. Something of the kind you describe may have happened with him. I have a very vivid remembrance of the march around Cincinnati, and it was exceedingly tiresome and unpleasant, especially as it followed a succession of similar marches, and the night was intensely dark. I shall deliver your message to my daughter; and shall be glad answer any enquiry
Very truly yours
Basil W Duke
