Thomas L. Hatton to Catharine A. Hatton, 21 September 1861
Camp Graham Sept 21/61

Dear Kate. I send these few lines to let you know that I am well and hope that you are the same also the rest of the family. enclosed you will find Seventeen dollars and a half. we were paid yesterday up to the first of September and we will have another months pay on the first of October but I do not know if we will get it before november I did not get as much money as I expected to get the pay is only 17 dollars per month for Sergeants and we all expected to get 19 dollars. I had from the 27th of July to the first of September it come to 20 dollars and 10 cents and I had to pay the Officers for some things that we have / for our use for eating there is a good deal of rascality practiced by the Officers to the men. I did not pay all that I had to pay because I wanted to send as much home to you as I could I will have to pay about one dollar next month. there is plenty of ways for to spend money about camp, there is every thing that a man wants to buy and if you have money you can get it but you have to pay well for it. there is some of the Officers going up to home and I send this with them I would like very much if it was more. I have received all your letters and every thing that you have sent down. You say that you have sent some tobacco but I have not received it yet I told you to send me
