Camp on Deep Creek Va April 13th/62
Dear Kate. I have just received your two letters one directed to Camp Graham and one to Fortress Monroe and I send these few lines to let you know that I am well and was glad to hear from you I hope that you may continue in good health tell the boys they must behave themselves. Our Captain is going to write about the things that I left behind at the old camp they were left in care of a man by the name of Burr along with some things of the Captains. I may not have a chance to write to you often but you must not feel uneasy write to me as often as you can. I send inside a little spoon that I took out of a Sesech house near Warwick / Court House tell Johnny it is for him and I sent it from the war. tell the other boys that I will send them something. We expect to get paid two months pay in a few days and as soon as I get it I will send all to you that I can spare we are very short of grub we have not had anything for the last four days but 7½ crackers and and this morning I borrowed some money from the Captain and we bought some from a sutler of a New York regiment and I have had a good dinner. Write soon and often the reason that old Joe came home was because he was discharged for not being fit for duty Give my respects to all
Yours Tom
