Thomas L. Hatton to Catharine A. Hatton, 7 June 1862
Fair Oak Station June 7/62
Dear Kate. I received your letter yesterday afternoon and was very glad to hear from you for it has been some time since I have had a letter from you I also got the paper you sent and I suppose by this time that you have got the letter that I wrote to you on last monday and you will see an account of the fight in the papers but I suppose it will be smoothed over by the papers. our Army suffered a great deal in killed and wounded but the enemy a great deal more than we did. they drove us from our camp and / captured everything belonging to us and we have nothing left but what we have on our backs and we have had a hard time of it ever since for it has been raining nearly the whole time since the fight and we have had scarcely anything to eat but for all that the boys are ready for more work and we expect it will come soon. I seen John Lemon John Mitcheson George Hoffner John Kelly and all the rest of the boys in Baxters the other day they are all well, but have not been in any fight yet. I cannot hear anything from Jack Telford or Pud Carpenter / yet and do not know how they are. Their regiment lays some distance from us and I have not been able to see any of them Give my respects to all hands and write soon
Yours Tom
