Mrs C Hatton
Dear Madam I received your letter of the 25th inst this morning. I had heard indirectly the sad news of your husband's death, but not having any official notice of it yet, I hesitated about writing you hoping that he might recover from his wound.
The condolence of friends upon such painful circumstances is but a poor consolation, but allow me to say Madam that I sympatise with you sincerely in your bereavement. Sergt Hatton was a man I esteemed very highly. he was a brave, good and true man and beloved by all his comrades. I was only waiting for an opportunity to promote him according to his merit, but it has pleased Divine Providence to take him from us. the only consolation we have is the knowledge that he died the death of a noble and brave soldier in the defence of his country.
Sergt Hatton drew his pay up to May 1st. I still continue him on my roll until I get an official notice to drop him. his pay therefore is still running on. As soon as we can get some blanks I will forward you the necessary papers to receive his pay. You will be entitled to a bounty and pension. I will write to Mayor Henry this evening to ask him if the Relief Committee of Phil. cannot arrange these matters for bereaved families free of charge
In the meantime Madam if I can be of service to you in any manner I hope you will not hesitate to let me know
Respy Yours
Thos H. Peters
