Head Quarters, 77th Reg't, O.V.I.,
Alton, Illinois, Jan. 9, 1863.
My Dear Son Lee—
I got a letter from Ma to-day, and she says you are going to school. I am very glad to hear it, and hope you will be a good boy, and learn ever so much. People say you look like Pa, and I want you to show them that you can be as bright a boy as any in your school. When you get older, you will learn to know how important it is to be a good scholar.
Tell Frank I will write to him again before long. I also owe Emma a letter, which she will get some of these days. I am entirely well now, and have no fears of ague and but little fear of the Small Pox. You can write a little to me. You will soon learn to write. A bushel of kisses to you and your brothers and sister.
Affectionately your Pa
A. W. McCormick
