Memphis, Tenn., Aug 4, 3 P.M.
My very dear Wife
We are now in sight of Memphis. It has been a hot trip, but we have got along very well. I am in excellent health, as are the boys. There has been nothing of interest, along the river since we passed Cairo, except the old battle grounds of New Madrid, Belmont, and Island No 10. I will write you more fully from Helena.
I hope you are all now at James', and having a good time. Write me often love.
Goodbye for the time. Bushels of love to all of you. Capt McN sends his love to Lynnie
As ever your
A.W. McCormick
I wrote to father, to Col. De Hass and to Mr. Scott since I left Alton. /
Capt McN and I have been up through the city for half an hour. It is a pretty place. Our boat starts immediately almost, and I must leave this to be mailed.
Do not go home sooner than you wish, on account of affairs there. Our goods will be taken care of. I wrote to Mr. Scott that you would be home in a few weeks.
We are off at 5 P.M.
