Andrew W. McCormick to Alice J. McCormick, 23 September 1863
Head Quarters 77th Regt O.V.I.
Little Rock, Ark., Sept 23, 1863.

My very dear Wife
I wrote you a few days ago—since receiving your letter of the 3d, but as I am going out seven miles, with my Co. to guard a steam mill, to be gone at least three days, I drop you another note.

I am in excellent health, and in buoyant hopes of the rebellion ending soon.—We have seen the Commercial of the 10th, with the announcement that Forts Wagner and Gregg, on Morris Island, are taken—that Chattanooga is in our hands—that Gen. Magruder, who commanded the rebels in Texas and Louisiana, is killed and his force awfully demoralized—that the rebels are about to ask for peace and the Union. All this inspires me with hope of an early return to my home, and my loved ones. God speed the day. / I expect a letter or two from you in the first mail—perhaps before our return. I cannot write more this morning, as we are to be at Brigade Head Quarters in a few minutes.

My regards to friends and my best love to you and the children.

A.W. McCormick
