Andrew W. McCormick to Alice J. McCormick, 29 February 1864
Camp Dennison,
Feb. 29th, 1864.

My very dear Wife
I have received two letters from you, and have written you two; but it seems from the one I got to-night, you had not yet got my first one.
I wrote you from Cincinnati yesterday; and at that time I expected that there was a possibility of my returning home on recruiting service for a short time. But I learn from Col. Mason, since my return to camp, that the order is inflexible, and that no officer will be left in Ohio. Several enlisted men will stay.

Capt. Lutgen resigned to-day. He says he is not able for the field. His resignation will be accepted, no doubt. If seniority must prevail, and Capt. Sisson gets promoted, it will make me "Senior Captain" with a certainty of next promotion. That will not be long hence, I think.

Well, dearest love, I feel more anxious to be with you and the children than I ever did before. But I cannot come home yet a while. Hope it wont be long till I can come.

Our recruits got their $73 each to-day. I superintended the detachment being paid, and had to aid those who could not write to sign the rolls, and they had to sign six times each, and then sign my name as witness some six hundred times. Think of that! But I signed the 600 times in two hours—a feat which astonished the Paymaster's clerk, and the spectators.

It is late or I should write you more fully. I do not think we will leave day after to-morrow, but that is the time talked of now.

I intended to write to daughter and to Frank but it is too late. I will get time in the morning, perhaps.

As ever yours
A.W. McCormick

Dear Daughter
I am much gratified at your improvement in letter writing. I shall feel quite proud of your letters soon, if you keep on improving. I'll write more next time

Your affectionate Pa
A.W. McCormick

Dear Frank
I have got another letter just now for ma. Tell her I will answer it to-night. Then I will write you more
